"Why The Heritage Park Walk"
Wild With Opportunity
The Heritage Park Walk was conceptualised by the North West Parks and Tourism Board in 2003, as an awareness campaign for affected communities around the establishment of the Heritage Park Project, which aims to link Pilanesberg National Park with Madikwe Game Reserve. Thus, creating an important Conservation Corridor linking the two parks, as a nature based tourism anchor project. It was decided upon as part of the Environment Week programme, with the last day culminating into World Environment Day Celebration (5th June). Members from affected communities have been part of the walk every year and some therefore, especially the youth, have a good grasp of what the Heritage Park is all about.
By design, the Heritage Park Walk entails "walking the wilderness" from Madikwe to Pilanesberg over four days, covering a total distance of 110kms. The starting points alternate between Madikwe and Pilanesberg every year.
The Heritage Park has received publicity from SABC's 50/50 television programme and has been patronized by government authorities from the North West Provincial Government and from the Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEAT) in the past.
The Heritage Park Project was officially launched on 8th April 2005, at which function the new Heritage Park logo was also unveiled.
The Heritage Park Walk is an established event and takes place annually, thus very much serving the purpose of "Familiarizing Man with His Environment". The pictures bear testimony!
